Following the financial difficulties of Jennings Musical Industries in the late 1960s, VOX began outsourcing the production of its effects pedals to several Italian electronics manufacturers. Rather than relying on a single factory, companies such as EF-EL, EME, and later JEN Elettronica were contracted by Thomas Organ to build different models under the VOX brand. This transition marked the beginning of the famous Italian-made VOX pedals, a period now regarded as one of the most collectible eras in vintage effects, thanks to their distinctive engineering, hand-assembled construction, and unique tonal character.
One of the rarest pedals from this period is the VOX Distortion, believed to have been manufactured by EF-EL around 1969–1970. Produced in very limited numbers, it remained largely unknown for decades until surviving examples revealed a circuit remarkably close to the legendary Sola Sound Tone Bender MK1.5. Built around a simple two-transistor topology, it delivers a warm, articulate drive with strong midrange presence, excellent touch sensitivity, and less compression than later fuzz designs. Rather than an aggressive fuzz, the VOX Distortion occupies a unique sonic space between a vintage overdrive and a classic British fuzz, making it one of the hidden gems of the early Italian VOX era.
